The Power of Hyaluronic Acid

Woman with glowing skin from hyaluronic acid

At this point we’ve all heard about the hydrating ingredient in our skincare called hyaluronic acid (HA). But did you know that not all hyaluronic acid products are created equal? To really defeat dry, dull and aging skin with hyaluronic acid there are a few things to consider. The molecular weight of HA is a critical factor in its effectiveness. Lower molecular weights penetrate the skin more deeply and are thought to be more effective in reducing wrinkles and promoting elasticity. Higher molecular weights remain nearer to the surface, forming a hydrating barrier on the skin that helps prevent moisture loss and protects the dermis against external damages.

Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which increases the skin’s ability to retain hydration, improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and aid in wound healing with anti-inflammatory properties. It is also beneficial to all skin types (yes – including acne!)

Innovative formulations may combine both high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid to achieve a dual effect—surface hydration and deeper skin moisturization.

Here are a few ways to tell if your HA product is high or low molecular weight:

  • High molecular weight products create a protective barrier on the skin’s surface – almost like a slippery film. Usually, HMW products will deliver immediate plumping effects and visible improvements in hydration. These products are commonly found in creams and gels or sheet masks and thick serums.
  • Low molecular weight products can reach deeper into the epidermis and physically change the way the skin cells absorb moisture – creating a longer lasting effect for treatments of common skin concerns. Products with LMW can be a light, almost water-like consistency usually found in serums, essence formulas or used in a delivery method like the Diamond Glow facial.

Which WNY Plastic Surgery Hyaluronic Acid product is right for you?

  • Dew Drops – HMW with added ingredients like Copper and Niacinamide.
  • HydraBoost – LMW pure hyaluronic acid with aloe that will visibly change dry and dull skin while calming irritation and redness.
  • CollagenBoost – HMW creamy serum with collagen and peptides for a perfect anti-aging product
  • Plump serum – LMW formulation of the Dew Drops (these two together can really be a  power couple if you’re looking for a visible change in your skin quickly)
  • Viktoria De’Ann Hyaluronic Peptide serum – LMW with polypeptides, tripeptides and ogliopeptides. This product absorbs into the skin quickly making it a very popular product for those of us who are a little too busy to wait minutes between applying serums and creams.

If you are looking for a facial treatment using both high and low molecular weight HA protocols, WNY Plastic Surgery’s Med Spa offers DiamondGlow™ facials and Microneedling with VAMP PDRN. Both of these options deliver HA directly into the dermis making your hydration goals obtainable and long-lasting.
